This information is on the past Ebola outbreaks from early 2021 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Guinea.

Just a few months after declaring the end of the last outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), they have confirmed four new cases of Ebola. On February 7th the Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola (WHO).  On May 3rd, 2021 the Democratic Republic of the Congo Ministry of Health declared an end to the Ebola outbreak (Zwizwai, Lancet). 12 Ebola cases were reported in D.R. Congo.

Separately, the West African country of Guinea declared a new Ebola outbreak on February 14th, with seven confirmed cases and three deaths.  This is the first time the disease has been reported in Guinea since the 2013-2016 outbreak in West Africa; the largest Ebola outbreak in history, which claimed over 11,000 lives.  “It’s a huge concern to see the resurgence of Ebola in Guinea, a country which has already suffered so much from the disease”, said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. On 19 June 2021, the outbreak was declared over. A total of 16 confirmed and 7 probable cases were reported, of whom 12 people died (WHO).

Support for both regions was mobilized by the World Health Organization and partner organizations.  The U.S. government funneled travelers from Guinea and the DRC to six U.S. airports and collecting passenger information for CDC public health follow-up (CDC).
